There are a number of different forklift jobs available for licensed forklift operators. These various positions include standard forklift operator, forklift mechanic, forklift driving specialist, and forklift trainer. The salaries for each of these jobs will vary depending on experience, training, and license type.
Standard Forklift Operator
Anyone with Level 1 or Level 2 forklift classification can find a standard operation forklift job. The Level 1 positions (for those with less than one year’s experience) are typically in warehouses and small businesses. The Level 2 standard forklift jobs, which are typically held by those with more than a year of experience with a forklift, are found with construction companies, who require the operator to navigate larger machinery in more hazardous situations. Forklift Mechanic
One particularly lucrative position among forklift jobs is that of forklift mechanic. These positions require additional training—often, a degree or certificate—from a mechanical or vocational school, but these forklift jobs also offer some of the best salaries (around $50,000/year). Forklift mechanics should be well versed in the service repairs, battery operation, and hydraulics for a variety of different machines, from diesel to electric forklifts. It is also necessary for mechanics to have solid communication skills, to better deal with clients and customers.
Forklift Trainer
Another possibility among forklift jobs is that of forklift trainer. Forklift trainers will typically devote most of their time to the on-site evaluations and hands-on training of other forklift operators. Often, the only requirements for this position are a valid forklift license and a significant amount of operating experience; however, because the OSHA allows flexibility on this, forklift certification requirements may differ from state to state. Some companies, for instance, may ask trainers to complete instructional training in specialized areas like rigging and order-picking, depending on the business.
Salaries
It is not necessary to obtain specialized licenses or complete extra schooling in mechanics in order to find a career amidst available forklift jobs. In fact, the large majority of forklift operators hold only a high school diploma. However, additional forklift operator training will likely prove rewarding in the end: novice drivers with little schooling might make as little as $17,000 per year, while experienced drivers with extra training often make over twice that much. The average salary for a standard forklift operator comes out to be around $27,000.
Despite common misconceptions, the position of a forklift operator may in fact constitute a career, and one that can be quite profitable. The job duties of a forklift operator offer a range of specialization and opportunities for advancement; however, as with most careers, the top positions often require additional schooling, a larger skill set, and a solid record of experience.
